We Are Moving Forward Confidently for $250 Billion
Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM) announced export data for February 2022. The export family reached a record with a historic performance in February as well. In February, export amounted to 20 billion dollars with an increase of 25 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. With this figure, the highest February export figure in history was reached. The intense interest of the companies in export continued to be reflected in the number of exporters in February.
In February, 1,718 companies joined the export family by exporting for the first time this month. Our exporters, who managed to fly the Turkish flag in 214 countries and regions, increased their exports to 164 countries. The top 3 countries to which our exporters export the most; Germany with $1.8 billion, the United States with $1.3 billion, and the United Kingdom with $1.1 billion. Our exporters set a monthly export record to 9 countries. While the automotive sector, which exported $2.6 billion in February, came in the first place, the chemicals sector, which reached $2.4 billion, came in second, and the ready-to-wear sector, which exceeded $1.8 billion, came in third.
Commenting on the export figures, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle said, “In 2021, our economy grew by 11 percent, the highest performance in 10 years. With this performance, we became the strongest performing country among the G-20, OECD, and EU countries in 2021. As the export family, we are proud to close 2021 with such success, when the whole world has many economic difficulties. The recent performance of our export shows that in 2022, our export family will lead Türkiye's growth while moving confidently towards the target of 250 billion dollars. I wholeheartedly congratulate every part of our export family who contributed to this historic success!”
The export figures for February 2022 were announced at a meeting attended by Trade Minister Mehmet Muş and Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM) Chairman İsmail Gülle. The Turkish exporter, which closed 2021 with the highest performance in 10 years and is the field workers of Türkiye's economic and trade diplomacy, continues its records in 2022. The export family carried out export of $20 billion in February, with an increase of 25 percent compared to the same month last year. With this figure, the highest February export figure in the history of the Republic was reached.
Türkiye was the strongest performer among G-20, OECD, and EU countries
Remarking in his opening speech that Türkiye grew by 11 percent in 2021 and performed the highest in the economy in the last 10 years, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle said, “With this performance, we became the strongest performing country among the G-20, OECD, and EU countries in 2021. Industrial production and export became the engine of this growth. Export recorded the highest growth based on main items. Export contributed 5.3 points to growth and net export contributed 4.9 points. The Industry grew by 17 percent and investments grew by 6 percent.”
“Our export family will lead Türkiye's growth in 2022 as well”
Stating that nearly half of the growth comes from export, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle said, “Türkiye is rising by producing and exporting. The recent performance of our export shows that our export family will lead Türkiye's growth in 2022 as well. “We are carefully following the developments between Russia and Ukraine”
Speaking about the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle said that they are carefully following the developments between Russia and Ukraine, Türkiye's two important trading partners and its neighbor in the Black Sea and that they hope this process will end with a restrained solution between the parties. Stating that they exported a total of 9 billion dollars to the two countries last year, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle said, “The two countries received over 8 percent of our foreign trade volume. We welcomed 4.7 million tourists from Russia and 2 million from Ukraine. As an export family, under the leadership of our President, we believe that with the support of our government, we will overcome this process with minimal impact.”
Noting that they met with Trade Minister Mehmet Muş and representatives of all sectors last weekend, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle said, “We took swift action to evaluate the effects of the developments on our economy and exports, and we evaluated the steps that can be taken to get out of this war with minimal impact. As Turkish Exporters Assembly, we are on high alert to manage this process with our sector boards and unions without victimizing our exporters. We are closely following all the events.”
“As an export family, we will take the most accurate position according to the developments”
TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle stated that they are evaluating scenarios that will negatively affect their trade with the sectors and working on alternative methods. Gülle said, “Unfortunately, we have witnessed many wars in the near geography of our country in the last 30 years. Despite all these conflicts that negatively affected the stability of the region, Türkiye has managed to maintain its stable political structure. This stability is reflected in our economy and export; In these years of wars and conflicts, our economy and export have grown steadily. Of course, the current developments in Ukraine are still warm, and new financial sanctions against Russia are added every other day. As an export family, we will take the most accurate position according to the developments.”
The highest February export figure in Türkiye's history reached
Commenting on the February export figures, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle said that as an export family, they also achieved a record by performing historically in February as well. “In February, our export amounted to 20 billion dollars, with an increase of 25 percent compared to the same month last year. With this figure, we managed to reach the highest February export figure in our history. I wholeheartedly congratulate every member of our export family who has signed this record.”
The highest export was in automotive, the highest increase was in the chemicals sector
Sharing details about the export figures, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle stated: “In the first 2 months of the year, our total exports reached 37.6 billion dollars. When we look at the details of our figures, we see that 24 sectors have increased their exports. Our automotive sector, which exported $2.6 billion this month, ranked first, our chemicals sector, which reached $2.4 billion, came in second, and our ready-to-wear sector, which exceeded $1.8 billion, came in third. In terms of the sector, the most remarkable increases were in chemicals, which increased its exports by 728 million dollars compared to the previous year, in steel with an increase of 595 million dollars, and the ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector with an increase of 412 million dollars. Our cereal, cement, glass, ceramic, and fruit and vegetable products sectors set a record in February.”
While export to 164 countries increased, monthly export records were set to 9 countries
Stating that exporters managed to fly the Turkish flag in 214 countries and regions, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle said, “We have succeeded in increasing our export to 164 countries. The top 3 countries where we export the most; Germany with $1.8 billion, the United States with $1.3 billion, and the United Kingdom with $1.1 billion. The countries in which we increased our export the most in terms of amount were the USA with 384 million dollars, Iraq with an increase of 318 million dollars, and Germany with an increase of 291 million dollars. When we look at export according to the country groups, we see that our export to the European Union, our biggest market, has reached a volume of 8.4 billion dollars with an increase of 22 percent. When we included other European countries outside the EU, the European continent's share of our February exports was 55.2%. In other countries, we exported $3.5 billion to Near and Middle Eastern countries, $2 billion to the African continent, $1.5 billion to North America, and $1.4 billion to the Far East. Our exporters set a monthly export record for 9 countries, including Germany, Poland, and Finland.”
Trade delegations, that started with UAE, will continue with Israel and Spain
Saying that they held their first trade delegations in 2022 in Dubai with very intense participation in February, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle said, “Buyers in the United Arab Emirates had a great interest for our Turkish companies. As a result of the agreements signed between the two countries, we have a very valuable opportunity to develop cooperation in the fields of health, industry, technology, agriculture, land and sea transportation. In February, we exported $477 million to the United Arab Emirates. We will continue our trade delegations with Israel on March 5 and Spain on March 14.”
1,718 more companies joined the export family
Stating that the intense interest of the companies in export continues to be reflected in the number of exporters in 2022 and that 1,718 companies have joined the export family by exporting for the first time this month, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle said that the new companies exported $72.7 million in February and that the number of companies exporting this month was 45,965.
12 percent increase in quantity
Stating that their exports on a quantity basis increased by 12 percent to 14.1 million tons, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle said that the export unit price continued to have a positive momentum and that the unit export value increased by 12 percent to $1.42 compared to the same period last year. In addition, TİM Chairman Gülle informed that the sectors that increased the unit export value the most were steel with 43 percent, defense and aviation with 40 percent, and chemicals with an increase of 27 percent.
69 cities increased their exports
Noting that 69 cities increased their exports in February, İsmail Gülle said, “Our top 3 exporting cities are, respectively; İstanbul with $8 billion, Kocaeli with $1.4 billion, and Bursa with $1.3 billion. Apart from these cities, our other cities that attracted attention with the increase in export were Izmir, which increased its export by 242 million dollars, and Gaziantep, which increased by 160 million dollars.”
“We will continue our TİM Anatolian Assembly programs to cover all our regions”
Stating that they carried out the TİM Southeastern Anatolia Assembly program in Gaziantep in February, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle said, “We have consulted with the exporters of our region in order to further increase our export in the new period. We observed current developments, problems, and demands by going down to the field. We will continue our TİM Anatolian Assembly programs to cover all our regions in the coming period. In February, our four cities, Tekirdağ, Kütahya, Kırşehir, and Çankırı, have made the highest exports in their history. I congratulate all our cities for this successful performance.”
Export in Turkish Lira increased by 92% in February
Stating that, according to the declarations opened, a total of ₺9 billion of exports were made to 165 countries in Turkish Lira, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle continued his speech as follows: “Export in Turkish Lira increased by 92 percent in February. The use of local currencies in mutual trade continues to be important for the upcoming period.”
“We started March with the important good news that our exporters are looking forward to. The Export Development Joint Stock Company, which was heralded by our President at our general assembly and created by our exporters with their resources, to eliminate the collateral problem, was officially launched as of March 1st. Together with The Export Development Joint Stock Company, we have entered a new era in the financing of export. İGE, The Export Development Joint Stock Company, will provide warranty support to our exporter SMEs who have trouble creating credit guarantees. Our exporters will no longer have to mortgage their real estate and properties to the bank. As the export family, we would like to express our gratitude to our President and Minister for this important mechanism.”
$50 billion targeted in Eximbank subsidies in 2022
Informing that, another good news on the financing needs came from the new loan guarantee fund support package, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle said, “A total of 60 billion TL KGF (Loan Guarantee Fund); applications have started for guaranteed investment, export and operating expenses support packages. 25 billion Liras of this important package was made available as an export support package. In addition, in Eximbank subsidies, benefited by more than 14,000 exporters last year, are targeted at $50 billion in 2022. Considering global inflation and the rapid upward momentum in our exports, the need for financing of our exporters is increasing day by day. As we move towards our $250 billion export target, the development of Eximbank resources is of utmost importance. Hopefully, we will see the reflections of these supports in our export figures.”

Emphasizing that they should increase their export by 2.1 billion dollars every month in order to reach to a target of 250 billion dollars that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan remarked it to export family in the annual evaluating meeting, TİM Chairman İsmail Gülle underlined that they achieved this increase in February as they did in January. Gülle also said, “Last month we exceeded this target by $2.6 billion and this month by $4 billion. The figures clearly show that we are confidently advancing towards the $250 billion goal. Türkiye will continue to rise with export in 2022 as well. I congratulate all our exporters.”
