Gamescom, one of the biggest commercial fairs of the world in the field of computer and video games, will be held in Köln, Germany, between the dates of 17-21 August 2016. Turkey became the partner country for the first time this year.
It is expressed that the reason for Turkey for following France, Scandinavian countries and United Kingdom, which were partner countries in previous years, as the partner country is related with focusing on the Euro-Asia region. Participation of Turkey to the fair as the partner country aims at providing such benefits as representing Turkey more strongly in the fair, to lead the way to new international business associations and to generate international awareness about the digital game sector in Turkey.
In the press conference held on July 14th in Köln hosted by Koelnmesse GmbH and German Interactive Entertainment Software Association (BIU), organizers of the Gamescom fair, it was announced that Turkey Game Developers Association (TOGED), ODTÜ TEKNOKENT and Electric-Electronic and Service Exporters Union Turkish Electro Technology - TET) will represent Turkey in the fair and the themes of the partner country were disclosed.
In the meeting, where the significance of Turkey's being the Partner Country of Gamescom, it was emphasized that the games are a tool that bring different people and cultures together and the importance of independent developers was underlined.
In the declarations, it was highlighted that the games provide billions of people from every country of the world from every age and sex the opportunity to get entertainment together and encourage the culture of living together and tolerance.
Tuğbek Ölek, President of Turkey Game Developers Association Consultancy Board, who underlined the fact that the games are a global culture, said in his speech that the players and game developers in every corner of the world are not really different from each other and a common culture could assume a very significant unifying role in a world that lost its unity.
It was expressed that in Gamescom 2016, where in addition to prominent studios of Turkey many independent studios shall also benefit from the supports provided by the Ministry of Economy, Turkish Exporters Assembly, Electric-Electronic and Service Exporters Union Turkish Electro Technology - TET) and public and NGO institutions such as Ankara Development Agency to game developers, they will be located in their own stands in the giant area prepared for Turkey. ODTÜ Teknokent Program Manager Özgür Karayalçın, who said that the independent developers have a very special place in Turkey's stand, told that it is an indicator of the supports provided to independent developers.
Karayalçın underlined the fact that computer games are among the sectors that are supported with priority in Turkey and added that “In Turkey, many public bodies are directly supporting the game sector, especially the Ministry of Economy and Development. Contrary to other countries, these supports are designed to support the independent developers as the first priority; also application and utilization processes are quite easy. From this point of view, we hope that the atmosphere of supporting the independent developers in Turkey will be an example for the other countries in Europe and in the world”.
